Mata Amritanandamayi (माता अमृतानन्‍दमयी) a.k.a. "Amma", "Ammachi" or "Mother" (born September 27, 1953) was born "Sudhamani" in Kerala and is a revered Hindu saint or godwoman.

Also known to her followers as Ammachi she is a devotee of Krishna. Her devotees claims that she had many mystical experiences as a child. Since 1981, she has been teaching spiritual aspirants all over the world. She founded a worldwide organization, the Mata Amritanandamayi Mission Trust, which is engaged in many spiritual and charitable activities.

The Mata Amritanandamayi Mission Trust runs many charitable institutions under the benign guidance of Amma. These humanitarian activities serve the most disadvantaged sections of society by providing development assistance, economic aid, medical aid, and educational facilities for everyone. Amma's generous spirit of service and love permeate these activities which reach the poorest areas of India and serve the masses whom society has rejected. Teaching by the example of her own life, Amma blends spiritual awareness with practical social service.

"I desire peace for the people; this is what makes me happy. In this world where so many people live in luxury and comfort, there are many who are suffering poverty and even starvation. With cooperation and love, we must selflessly serve the whole world without expecting anything in return."

The Mata Amritanandamayi Mission Trust's charitable activities include a program to build 25,000 homes for the poor, women's shelters, pension disbursements for widows, orphanages, hospices, hospitals, and community aid centers, homes for the aged, eye clinics, speech therapy centers, just to name a few. This projest has been completed.

One of the major projects is the AIMS (Amrita Institute for Medical Science and Research, www.aimshospital.org) hospital in Kochin, Kerala is specialized in treating cardiac disease and is one of the most modern hospitals in Asia. The hospital cares for poor people who would not otherwise receive treatment. For many, AIMS is their last hope of survival and the only place in Kerala where they can get free treatment of such a specialized kind. Recently AIMS has been awarded Medical University status by the Government of Kerala.

Concurrently, Trust's network of educational facilities is blossoming all over India. So far, it includes numerous elementary, secondary, vocational, and graduate schools, ranging from remote tribal tutelage to advanced business and technical certification. In particular, the Amrita Institutions Campus in Coimbatore, India offers advanced degrees in engineering, information technology and management.

Her Critics

Amritanandamayi, her followers and their activities have not been above criticism. Eminent writers and social activists apart from rationalists and atheists in India always expressed serious doubts about her divine powers. Rather than tolerating such criticism, the ashram authorities counter them by threats. An example is the threats received by Paul Zacharia, an eminent literary figure in Malayalam, for writing an essay in a leading journal published from Kerala. Suspicious deaths have also been reported from the precincts of her ashram.
