Marxism-Leninism is a term used to denote several different (and sometimes opposing) branches of Marxist thought:
- Strictly speaking, Marxism-Leninism refers to the version of Marxist theory developed by Vladimir Lenin; see Leninism.
- Leon Trotsky and his supporters claim to be upholding Marxism-Leninism; see Trotskyism.
- Joseph Stalin and his supporters claim that the theory and practice of the Soviet Union represented Marxism-Leninism; see Stalinism.
- Mao Zedong and his supporters (and supporters of the People's Republic of China in general) also claim the term Marxism-Leninism as their own; see Maoism.
