Marram grass is a genus of perennial grass, used to prevent or stop erosion of dunes. It is a pioneer species which acts as a sand-binder and dune-builder, with an extensive root system and a coarse, stiff structure. The roots contain rhizhomes which add nitrates to the otherwise nutrientless soils. When windy the leaves of the grass curl up to shield the stomata and reduce transpiration.

There are two species of Marram grass, and one hybrid:

  • North American Marram grass Ammophila breviligulata
  • European Marram grass Ammophila arenaria
    • Hybrid Marram grass X Ammocalamagrostis baltica - a hybrid between Ammophila arenaria and Calamagrostis epigeios.
