Margaret Julia (Marlo) Thomas (born November 21, 1937 in Detroit, Michigan) is an American actress. She is the daughter of comedian Danny Thomas.She is most famous for her role as Ann Marie on the television series That Girl, which ran on ABC from 1966 to 1971. Nowadays, she is best known to younger viewers as the mother of Jennifer Aniston's character on the sitcom Friends. She also raises money for her charity, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Started by her father, the organization helps children suffering from grave forms of cancer.
She has been married to talk show host Phil Donahue since 1980.
In the early 1970s, she conceived of a project to teach her then-young niece Dionne about life. The result was the popular television special/book/audio recording/musical Free To Be...You And Me, which appeared on television in 1972 and was published in 1974. It also spawned a sequel, Free To Be...A Family, in 1988.
