Mark Lawrenson (born 2nd June 1957) was an English football player and now a broadcaster for the BBC.Born in Preston, Lancashire, Lawrenson began his career at Preston North End, and also played for Brighton and Hove Albion before being signed to Liverpool in August 1981 by Bob Paisley at a then Liverpool transfer record of £900,000.
He formed a defensive partnership with Alan Hansen that is still regarded as one of the best-ever in English club football. In his time at Liverpool, he made 332 appearances and scored 17 goals, winning the Division 1 title 5 times, the European Cup, the FA Cup and the League Cup 3 times.
Lawrenson also gained 39 international caps for the Republic of Ireland.
In March 1988, at the age of 30 his playing career was brought to a premature end by an achilles injury and Lawrenson went on to become manager of Oxford United and also worked alongside Kevin Keegan as a defensive coach at Newcastle United.
He became a football pundit at the BBC in 1997, and has been a regular since then, often teaming up with old club-mate Hansen.
