Leslie Mark Hughes (born 1 November 1963, Ruabon, Wrexham, Wales), nicknamed Sparky, is a Welsh football player and manager.Mark was playing for his county in an under-12's tournament when he was spotted by scouts for Manchester United, who signed him up for their youth side when he was aged 14. He also played for Bayern Munich and F.C. Barcelona and was sold by Manchester United to Chelsea in 1995. Later he moved to Southampton F.C, and finished his playing career after two years at Blackburn Rovers F.C.
He played for the Welsh national football team 72 times, scoring 16 goals. In 1999 he was appointed part-time manager of the national team, going full-time in 2002. During his custodianship, the national team enjoyed one of its most successful periods ever, reaching the play-offs for the Euro 2004 Championships where they were defeated 1-0 on aggregate by Russia (who did not perform outstandingly in the subsequent finals). In September 2004 he became manager of Blackburn Rovers F.C, although he also remained manager of Wales for the two 2006 World Cup qualification matches, against England and Poland, in October 2004.
