Marie Bashir was born in Narrandera in rural New South Wales.She was appointed in 1993 as Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Sydney.
She was appointed Governor of New South Wales in 2001 by the Bob Carr government. She is the first woman Governor of New South Wales and the first ever New South Wales Governor of Lebanese descent.
She is married to former Mayor of Sydney Sir Nicholas Shehadie.
