Mara Salvatrucha, abbreviated as MS, is primarily a Salvadorian street gang with its origins in Los Angeles, California. MS began in the late 1980s when refugees fled to the United States to escape from the civil war in El Salvador. Unaccepted in the Hispanic L.A. neighborhoods they settled in, they quickly became targets of existing local gangs. As with most gangs, Mara Salvatrucha originally formed as a means of protection and eventually transformed into an violent estalishment for organized crime.Although predominantly a Salvadorian-based gang, members have been accepted from other Latino cultures, as well as African American and Caucasians. Through travel and deportations, this organization has spread back to El Salvador and later in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and all throughout Central America.
Today, MS also has a strong presence in Washington, D.C and has been alleged to have ties with Al Qaida (القاعدة);.
