Magdalenian Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description
The Magdalenian, also spelt Magdalénien, refers to the last culture of the Palaeolithic in western Europe. It is named after the type-site of La Madelaine in the Dordogne region of France.It existed between c. 15,000 and 10,000 BP, during the last ice age. The Magdalenien has regular blade industries struck from carinated cores. At the end of the period, there is already apronounced trend of microlithisation. The bone harpoons and points are the main criterium for the interiour chronology of the period. As well as flint tools, the Magdalenians produced worked bone and ivory for functional and aesthetic purposes. Such mobile art included figurines and engraved weapons. Cave sites like Lascaux present examples of cave art.
In northern Spain and south west France it was superseded by the Azilian culture.
