Macclesfield Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description

Macclesfield is a market town in Cheshire England with a population of around 69,000. Macclesfield is located on the edge of the Peak District, on the River Bollin and the Macclesfield Canal, and is most famous for its once thriving silk industry. It is the administrative centre of the Macclesfield borough.

The wildlife painter Charles Tunnicliffe was born and raised in Langley, one of the many villages surrounding Macclesfield. He studied at the Macclesfield College of Art, now the Silk Museum.

It is also home to famous furniture store Arighi Bianchi, local football club Macclesfield Town, Kings School for Boys which dates from the 16th Century and Kings Girls School, a much more recent development, both are prestigious and highly exclusive.

Present day industries include: pharmaceuticals, textiles, light-engineering, paper and plastics.

Areas of Macclesfield have their own history and identity, the smaller villages and hamlets are: Gawsworth, Hurdsfield, Prestbury, Sutton, Tytherington, Kerridge and Rainow.
