Lucha Reyes (Peruvian singer) Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description
Lucha Reyes (July 19, 1936-October 31, 1973), was a Peruvian singer who became one of the most respected singers of her country.Reyes was born to a poor Lima family. One of sixteen siblings, she lost her dad when he died after she turned six months old.
Reyes, who was one of Peru's most famous Black personalities; spent much of her childhood living far from her closest family, and at a home owned by other members of her family. She would sell newspapers and lottery tickets to survive. The house she was living at was burned, and she went on to live at a Catholic church.
Reyes would put on singing shows in front of families and friends. It was at one of these shows that she met Pitito Perez, a very famous Peruvian singer of the era. Perez liked her voice and invited her to join him in a duo. The duo was named "Lucha y Juan". This duo would give Reyes an opportunity to be heard on national radio stations. She debuted on radio on a show named "El Sentir de los Barrios", or "The way the Barrio (People) Feel". Her first song on that show was "Abandonada", a song with lyrics that many think resembled her own experiences on the streets.
Lucha Reyes was married to a policeman briefly. She always refused to declare the reason that her marriage lasted for such a short period of time. Later on, she was diagnosed with Tuberculosis and Diabetes. After being diagnosed with those diseases, she joined the controversial music group Pierra Ferrando, where she stayed for ten years. Pierra Ferrando was controversial because many obervers considered the way in which the band leader treated the group's public to be humilliating to the group's fans.
Reyes would later go on to act in a movie named "Una Carta al Cielo" ("A Letter to Heaven"), about a boy whose mother, voiced-over by Reyes, had died.
This movie convinced Reyes that she had a future in acting as well. She acted sporadically in theater plays around Lima.
In 1970, she released what many consider to be her greatest hit, a song named "Regresa" ("Come Back"), which, in turn, led to Reyes recording her first LP. This song became a number one hit internationally, and , soon after, she began her only international tour.
This would be the beginning of her downfall, however: soon after, she began suffering from diabetic complications, such as Blindness and heart disease, all of which led to her becoming an alcoholic.
Reyes apparently felt that death was nearby when she asked the famed composer, Pedro Pacheco, to write her a song titled "Mi Ultima Cancion" ("My Last Song"). On October 30 of 1973, one day before her death, she sang "My Last Song" in public for the first time.
