Lubbock Tornado Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description
The Lubbock Tornado is the tornado event that occurred in Lubbock, Texas on May 11, 1970. It is considered one of the most notable tornadoes in Texas state history.The tornado formed just north of town at 9:00 P.M. local time. Residents seemed to see the clouds boiling and rotating. Minutes later, the tornado destroyed everything in its path. Between the time it formed and 9:35, there was 8 1/2-mile (14 km) swath of destruction. The tornado was at least 1 1/2 miles (2 km) in width at one point in time.
The tornado killed 28 people. Twenty-seven of the 28 were killed in the tornado's suction vortices. Fifteen square miles (40 km²) of the city were either damaged or destroyed. It caused $125 million in damage making it, up to that point, the costliest tornado in U.S. history. It would hold that record for a little less than nine years.
