The municipality Løten in the county of Hedmark, Norway, has 7,292 inhabitants as of January 1, 2002.The name come from old Norwegian "Lautin". The word is the combination of "Laut" and "vin" where "Laut" means a hollow depression in the ground and "vin" which means a natural meadow. The name was written "Løten" from the beginning of the 1800.
Løten is the most eastern of the original villages in Hedmarken where it is lays between Hamar and Elverum. There have been traffic between east to west and in immemorial times. The old center was by the Løten Church, which is from the 13'th century. When the railroad was opened in 1862, Løten station became the new center of trade and management.
Edvard Munch was born in Løten on 12 December 1863.
