Levi or Levy (לוי "Attached", Standard Hebrew Levi, Tiberian Hebrew Lēwî) was the founder of the Levite tribe of ancient Israel. He was a son of Jacob, also known as Israel, who was in turn a son of Isaac, the son of Abraham.The tribe of the Levites gained no land when they entered Canaan. Instead, they were given the duty of priests and lived in the protection of various brother tribes where they taught the Torah.
The most famous Levite was Moses, who received the law from God on Mt. Sinai in the Book of Exodus. His brother, Aaron became the first Levite High-priest of Israel, known as a Kohen - Gadol.
Levi Strauss invented and patented jeans, and started the Levi Strauss company which produces Levi's, a brand of jeans.
