Danny is a young boy who watches movies to escape the hardships of daily life in downtown New York City. His favorite films are the fictional Jack Slater action movies, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Danny unwittingly obtains a magical ticket that transports him into the movie, where Jack Slater is real and is fighting bad guys as a cop in Los Angeles. Danny unsuccessfully tries to convince Slater that he's a fictional character and that they're living in a movie, using the ever-present action movies clichés as proof.
Danny uses his knowledge of the movie to help Slater catch the criminals, including Mafia gangster Tony Vivaldi and his henchman, Benedict. Things take a turn for the worse when Benedict discovers Danny's magical ticket and uses it to cross over to the real world, delighting as he discovers the fact that there, "bad guys can win".
Danny and Slater follow him to the real world to stop Benedict's plot: to kill the actor playing Slater (Schwarzenegger as himself), then use the magical ticket to bring villains from other movies to the real world to wreak havoc.
