Kwame Brown (born March 10, 1982) is a basketball player for the Washington Wizards of the NBA. Originally signing a letter of intent to play for the University of Florida but later declaring for the NBA draft, Brown added history to the NBA by becoming the first high school player ever to be selected the first pick overall in the 2001 NBA draft.
Now standing at 6 feet and 11 inches, Brown was one of the most spectacular high school players in his class. Brown finished his high school career at the Glynn Academy (GA) as the school's all-time leading rebounder (1,235) and shot-blocker (605); he also finished all-time second as a scorer. He was also named to the 2001 McDonald’s All-American Team.
Despite the hype and expectations, Brown’s rookie season was marred with a lack of maturity as well as criticism from the media and Michael Jordan, who resigned as the Wizards' president of basketball operations to play for the team. Brown averaged 4.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.
In his second season as a Wizard, Brown saw more action in the league. He started 20 out of the 80 games he played. Although Brown’s total minutes doubled one in his rookie season, he merely showed slight improvement, posting an average of 7.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Kwame Brown showed the fans what he is capable of in his third season, posting career highs in both points (10.9) and rebounds (7.4). Although Brown has finally matured into an NBA player, there is much more room for improvement. So far, his career game highlight is when he scored 30 points and grabbed 19 rebounds against Chris Webber and the Sacramento Kings.
Kwame Brown is entering his fourth season in the NBA. He has shown bits of what he is capable of, and the Wizards are looking forward to him building on his game and becoming an inside presence in their frontcourt, perhaps even a franchise player.
