Kohl is a mixture of soot and other ingredients, used by Egyptian and other Eastern women to darken the edges of the eyelids.The content of kohl and the recipes used to make it vary greatly. Some kohl preparations contain a large proportion of lead sulfide.
Kohl has been worn traditionally as far back as ancient Egypt, both for cosmetic and medicinal purposes (although kohl containing lead sulfide poses a health risk).
