Kim Komando is the host of the Kim Komando Show, a radio talk show rated in the top 10 nationally by Arbitron. The talk show, which focuses on computers and the Internet, is the largest in weekend syndication. It is broadcast live for three hours each Saturday.
She also distributes a daily one-minute show nationally, the Kim Komando Computer Minute. The weekly and daily shows are carried by more than 400 radio stations in the United States and Canada.
Ms. Komando has numerous other consumer products, all focused on computers and the Internet. These include a weekly column that runs in more than 100 newspapers, and a column for Microsoft's Small Business section. A question-and-answer column is carried by USA Today. Ms. Komando has a show on CNN. And she has authored seven books.
In addition, Ms. Komando publishes a weekly newsletter that is distributed via e-mail. She also has two daily newsletters, the Tip of the Day and the Cool Site of the Day. Altogether, she e-mails more than three million newsletters to subscribers weekly.
Ms. Komando began her career after graduating from Arizona State University with a computer information systems degree. She sold computers for IBM, AT&T and Unisys before starting her own business.
The national radio show began in 1995. At the time, she had three affiliates. She had attempted to sell the show idea to CBS and ABC, but was rebuffed. A CBS vice president told her that computers were a fad, much like pet rocks.
In addition to her fledgling show, her column ran in one newspaper, The Arizona Republic. She began the business in one room in a Phoenix office building, which she and her partner, Barry Young, had converted to a studio.
They named the parent business WestStar TalkRadio Network. She and Young, now her husband, own the entire building today.
Ms. Komando had no employees when she started broadcasting. She now has more than 20.
WestStar syndicates several other shows, in addition to The Kim Komando Show. The company, which is privately held, is located in Phoenix.
