John Prescott Ellis is an American journalist and media consultant. Ellis is a cousin of U.S. President George W. Bush.

His father is Alexander (Sandy) Ellis, an insurance executive in Boston, who studied at Yale. His mother, Nancy Bush Ellis is a sister of George H.W. Bush. He grew up in Concord, Connecticut. He is the same age as Jeb Bush and they spend most holidays together.

Ellis attended Milton Academy high school and later went to Yale University.

In 1978, he started working for NBC as a consultant. He then worked for the George H.W. Bush campaign in 1979. He later returned to NBC, where he worked for the elections unit.

After ten years he changed his job and became a consultant and op-ed columnist for the Boston Globe.

Election night 2000

During the election night 2000 Ellis was working as a consultant for Fox News, where he analysed data from the Voter News Service. It was Ellis who was responsible for the decisions of Fox News to call states for Gore or Bush, based on statistical results from the VNS data. Fox News had called Gore for Florida early in the evening, and was the last major network to retract their call for Gore. However, they were the first (at 2:16 am ET) to call Florida for Bush.
