Charles Joseph Scarborough (born April 9, 1963), better known as Joe Scarborough, was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1995 to 2001, and currently hosts a nightly program on the MSNBC cable network called Scarborough Country.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, he received his bachelor's degree from the University of Alabama in 1985 and his law degree from the University of Florida in 1990. After practicing law at a major firm in Pensacola, Florida for four years, he was elected to Congress in 1994.

Scarborough served on the Armed Services Committee, the Judiciary Committee, Government Reform and Oversight, and the Education Committee. In 1998, he was named Chairman of the Civil Service Committee. President Bill Clinton called the Long Term Care bill he drafted and passed as Chairman of that committee "landmark legislation."

Scarborough championed a balanced budget, human rights, and environmental causes while in Congress. In 1996, he led the effort to relocate hundreds of minority families whose homes were located over a superfund site.

Scarborough and the former Melanie Hinton married in 1986 and have two children-- Joey and Andrew. They separated in March, 1997 and their divorce was finalized in March, 1999.

In late May, 2001, he announced his resignation from Congress. He left to spend more time with his children, practice law, and launch a cable news program.

Nearly two months after announcing his resignation, on July 10, 2001, one of Scarborough's aides, Lori Klausutis, was found dead in the congressman's office in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. The official cause of death was a heart failure, although her initial autopsy suggested severe fractures in the skull. The investigation was never pursued further, and Scarborough was never implicated in Klausutis' death. Two suspects, Theopholis and Steve Salmon were initially questioned by police. Both men have ben released, but are still considered "persons of interest".

Scarborough practiced law with the firm Levin, Papantonio and worked on environmental law cases. At that same time, Scarborough was appointed a member of the President's Council on the 21st Century Workforce.

He is the host for MSNBC's Scarborough Country and the author Rome Wasn't Burnt in a Day.
