Joaquín Lavín is a Chilean politician, member of the Unión Demócrata Independiente (UDI) party and the mayor of Santiago de Chile. He was the presidential candidate for the UDI-RN coalition Alliance for Chile in 1999, but lost to PS candidate Ricardo Lagos in a runoff. He is the principal candidate of Chilean right-wing to the 2005 presidencial election. He is known for his populist style and for his worry about people's real problems.
