James Dimon is the current COO of JP Morgan Chase and is in line to be the CEO for the combined JP Morgan Chase/Bank One corporation. It is planned that after two years, he will take over the CEO responsibilities, while the current CEO William Harrison will stay as chairman.
Jamie began his career working as an apprentice to Sandy Weill in 1982, who at that time worked for American Express. In a power struggle, Weill left in 1985 and began to work on taking over a consumer finance company and using it to purchase more companies to become a financial services conglomerate. The end result was the formation of Citigroup in 1998. During this time Jamie and Sandy got into a large argument over the perceived lack of promotion given by Jamie to Sandy's daughter. This rift led to further arguments culminating in a brawl with another employee during a dinner dance. Jamie was asked to leave, and went on to be CEO of Bank One. Observers of the JP Morgan/Bank One merger feel that this is an attempt for Jamie to outdo Sandy, as the combined company will be just behind Citigroup in asset size.
