Ivan II of Bulgaria, known to his contemporaries as 'The Scourge of Carpathia', was born in the capital city, Plovdiv, in 1224. After the death of his father Duke Frodrich IV in 1236, Ivan ruled Bulgaria (then known as Boldavia and part of the Ottoman Empire) for 48 years.

He is known for renouncing the Protestant Reformation and reverting the country back to the old traditions of the Boldavian Orthodox Church. He was also an accomplished cellist and composed several musical works which became very popular throughout Europe for many years.

Ivan II died of the Black Plague in 1275.
