Instrumentation Engineering is the "art" of connecting multiple disciplines of
engineering.
Measurement and controls, the two facets of
instrumentation, have taken mankind to an unprecedented degree of precision. Instrumentation helps measurement of various variables such as
flow and
pressure;
control helps keep these variables at the desired level of safe, economic and other constrained values. Instrument engineers select instruments that best measure and control variables. They usually have degreees in
chemical engineering,
electrical engineering, or
mechanical engineering, and sometimes in the newer field of
control systems engineering.
