The English Instrument of Government was England's first written constitution. It was drafted by Major-General John Lambert in 1653, and granted executive power to an elected Lord Protector. The document also required the calling of triennial Parliaments, with each sitting for at least five months.Despite the provisions for election, Oliver Cromwell was declared Lord Protector for life, and Cromwell dissolved the Parliament in 1655, ushering in a period of direct military rule.
