Ian Woosnam (March 2, 1958, Oswestry, England) is a British golf player representing Wales.He played as an amateur in regional competitions in Shropshire alongside Sandy Lyle. He turned professional in 1976.
In 1982 he won the Swiss Open. Woosnam was 3rd in the 1986 British Open. In 1987, he won 8 tournaments and was among the leaders of the European tour money list. In 1991, Woosnam topped the Sony World Rankings, and emulated his British rivals, Sandy Lyle and Nick Faldo by winning the US Masters; the first person representing Wales to ever win a major. Woosnam has also been a member of the Ryder Cup team and was a vice captain for the 2002 European team.
Woosnam was also the first player to capture the World Match Play Championship in three decades, last winning in at Wentworth in 2001.
