"I Don't Like Mondays" was a no. 1 hit by The Boomtown Rats.

Written by Bob Geldof, the song was based on the story of an American teenager, Brenda Ann Spencer, who shot several children and teachers at the elementary school across the street from her home in 1979, killing two adults and injuring eight children and a police officer. After the incident ended, she gave as her motivation as, "I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day." The chorus includes the lines:

Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
I want to shoot
The whole day down.

The song was played incessantly on Monday mornings by album-oriented rock format radio stations in the United States throughout the 1980s. It got to No.1 in the UK charts in July 1979.
