Hawaiian could refer to
- the Hawaiian language
- the native Hawaiian people
- a resident of the state of Hawaii. However, to avoid confusion, residents of the state normally do not refer to themselves as Hawaiian in this sense, unless they have, in fact some Hawaiian blood (see above). They might instead refer to themselves as kama`aina, meaning "child of the land", especially if born (or at least raised) in Hawai‘i, as this term implies origin (or great familiarity), but not descent.
