Gweru (spelled Gwelo until 1982) is a city in Zimbabwe. Geographical location 19° 25' South, 29° 50' East. Population 78,940 (1982). The city was founded in 1894 by Dr. Leander Starr Jameson.Former Rhodesian prime minister Ian Smith was born in the city.
