The globus pallidus is one of the major nuclei of the basal ganglia. It is divided into the internal and external segments. The internal segment uses GABA as a neurotransmitter. Along with the putamen it forms the lenticular nucleus in the brain.Also recognized as the Paleostriatum, the globus pallidus is the phylogenetically oldest part of the corpus striatum.
