Genetic erosion Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description
Genetic erosion is either loss of genetic diversity, in a particular location and over a particular period of time, including the loss of individual genes, and the loss of particular combinations of genes such as those manifested in landraces or varieties. It is thus a function of change of genetic diversity over time (FAO-IPGRI 2002).or
A permanent reduction in the number, evenness and distinctness of alleles, combinations of alleles, of actual or potential agricultural importance in a defined geographical area. "Combinations of alleles" should thus be taken to apply at all levels, including gene, genotypes, populations, species and ecosystems (FAO 1999).
or
A permanent reduction in richness or evenness of common localized alleles or the loss of combination of alleles over time in a defined area (Guarino 1999).
