General time dilation is a hypothetical relativistic effect of the time runing slower in a space containing masses than in an empty space. In a homogeneous space the effect is isotropic and exponential with the distance from the observer to the observed point in space according to where is time in observed pont in space at distance from an observer, is time at the observer, and , where is speed of light, is Newtonian gravitational constant, and is density of space (constant is known in general relativity as Einstein's radius of the universe).

The effect is required if the principle of conservation of energy is strictly valid. It makes the light signals irreversible with respect to time by which it simulates tired light effect but with the same time dilation as in Hubble redshift. Despite that the effect looks paradoxical being required for any observer in the universe it may be shown that it doesn't cause any logical contradiction.

The Newtonian counterpart of the effect would be dynamical friction applied to photons.

If the effect is real it simulates accelerating expansion of space with Hubble's constant and acceleration .
