general protection fault (abbreviated GPF) is a error that can occur in the
Microsoft Windows family of computer operating environments and
operating systems. It is the result of an application or process trying to access memory outside the space that has been allotted it by the operating system. It is often, but not always, the result of a
segmentation fault.
