Flipper (band) Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description
Flipper (known earlier as Negative Trend) was one of the few well-known punk bands that came out of the San Francisco scene in the late 70s and early 80s. They were also very popular in the Los Angeles area and were promoted by the local punk rock radio station KROQ and their influential disk jockey Rodney Bingenheimer. Flipper played at venues such as the Mabuhay Gardens (aka "The Mab") and the Deaf Club in S.F., and CBGB's in NY.Flipper's music was characterized by hand-clapping and an unusually slow tempo. Their best known album "Generic" was recently reissued by music producer Rick Rubin and his label American Recordings. They were best known for the song "Sex Bomb."
Flipper was also included on the seminal Live at Target compilation (along with Factrix, Nervous Gender, and Uns), released in 1980 as both a video (from Target Video), and as an LP (on Subterranean Records).
Public Image Ltd. was widely thought to have stolen cover art/concept of the Generic Flipper album, and was subsequently parodied by Flipper with the album title, Public Flipper Ltd.
