The use of family values to refer exclusively to conservative ideologies has been challenged, as many liberal commentators have advocated a more expansive, general, and some would say historical definition of family, which includes households of any kind.
Family values as the non-restrictive promotion of traditional social structures
As popularly understood by conservatives and others, family values has two aspects: one of positive promotion of what are thought to be "traditional" families, and one of opposition to the creation or recognition of households thought to be "non-traditional".
On the side of positive promotion, family values are thought to represent and promote the notions of morality and moral character, decency, respect for tradition and stability of the household, work ethic, and social order. Thus, many who support "family values" consider themselves to be "pro-family".
The role of "family values" in opposing sexual openness
As popularly understood, family values also have a more restrictive aspect that includes opposition to the creation or recognition of what they consider to be "non-traditional" families or households, as well as opposition to behavior thought to be sinful, and opposition to some forms of open communication about sex.
Thus, while "family values" is defined differently by many people, the term is often used to promote the elimination or repression of homosexuality, the support of political measures to ban or restrict abortion, softening the separation of church and state, supporting school prayer and corporal punishment of children, opposing sex education, reinforcing gender roles, and eliminating violence and human sexuality from public discourse.
family values">Efforts to "reclaim" the term family values
Use of the term family values to apply only to conservative values has led to some controversy. While conservative family values promote and support the authority and image of a traditional patriarchal family, they have been criticized as failing to support, or even promoting the destruction of, other types of families, such as families with single, gay, lesbian, or transgender parents. "Family values" have been criticized as failing to support issues of child care, education, family planning, and reproductive rights, which many believe to be important family concerns.
Some have argued that the family conceived in many of these conservative ideologies an idea of relatively modern origin, and the concept of family was traditionally synonymous with household. Therefore, some more liberal groups have sought to expand the term family values to include political measures designed to support and strengthen households in general, rather than simply mainstream, heterosexual nuclear families.
