Empowerment refers to increasing the political, social or economic strength of individuals.Many times empowerment refers to members of groups that have been excluded from the decision-making process through social discrimination - for example, through discrimination based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender etc.
In economic development, it is an approach based on mobilizing the self-help efforts of the poor, rather than providing them with social welfare. In the sphere of management and organizations, empowerment has often been used to describe processes for giving workers greater discretion and resources in order to better serve customers and the the interests of organizations they work for. This use of the word is somewhat at odds with other usage, which most often assumes groups and individuals are empowered to better serve their own interests.
