Everett had already recorded two solo albums under the name "E," when he met musicians Tommy Walter and Butch Norton. Together, they founded Eels. The main reason for this name was so that the band's records would be next to E's in an alphabetical ordering. It was only later that they realised that The Eagles would be in between.
In 1996 the band releases their debut album Beautiful Freak: a melancholic pop record, where the lyrics of a tormented Everett shine. With the tracks Novocaine For The Soul and Susan's House the band had modest international success.
When Everett's sister Elisabeth committed suicide, the band released their most depressive album to date: Electro-Shock Blues. E's lyrics were again very personal, as witnessed by songs like Elizabeth On The Bathroom Floor. The album also contains one of their bigger hits, Last Stop This Town.
In 2000, the unexpectedly happy Daisies Of The Galaxy album was released. I Like Birds and Mr. E's Beautiful Blues are regarded as the successes from this album.
In 2001 Souljacker was released. Again, the band took a different step compared to older albums. This time, electric guitars determine the sound of the album. One of the reasons for this could be the collaboration with guitarist John Parish, who worked with P. J. Harvey on earlier projects.
2003 marked the release of the album Shootenanny!.
In 2004, Eels announces work is underway for a new album, due for release in 2005, called BLINKING LIGHTS And Other Revelations.. In the meantime, a few new tracks will be released on soundtracks and tribute albums.
