Dunnet Head Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description
Contrary to popular opinion, the most northerly point on the island of Great Britain is not John O'Groats, but 20 kilometres west at the northern tip of Dunnet Head.Dunnet Head is the name given to the northern end of a small peninsula 10 kilometres east of Thurso in the Caithness region of Scotland. On a clear day, the view commands excellent views of Stroma to the east, and Hoy and Orkney Mainland 15 kilometres away to the north across the Pentland Firth.
At the top of the 90 metre cliffs stands a 105 metre tall lighthouse, built in 1831, as well as minor fortifications, built in World War II to protect the base at Scapa Flow.
The northernmost point of the headland, (58°40'18"N, 3°22'30"W) is known as Easter Head.
The nearest town is Brough, 5 kilometres south.
