Dromaeosauridae Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description
A subgroup of Deinonychosauria that includes Deinonychus, Dromaeosaurus, Velociraptor, Saurornitholestes, and Utahraptor. They were dominant carnivores in the lower Cretaceous period. Dromaeosaurids are Theropods, and are a sister group to modern birds.Recently described dromaeosaurs, such as Microraptor gui and Cryptovolans had modern pennaceous feathers and fully formed remiges, leading to the belief that these animals were capable of powered flight.
The characteristics of Dromaeosauridae are distinctive. They were lightly built, agile hunters. Unlike their close relatives, such as Troodon, dromaeosaurids were muscular animals. They were among the most intelligent dinosaurs, their intelligence likely approaching that of modern-day birds of comparable sizes.
There evidence that some dromaeosaurids hunted in packs, but this evidence is inconclusive.
Dromaeosauridae was a very successful group in the Cretaceous, existing for over 60 million years, up until the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction event.
