The genus Delonix forms part of the subfamily Caesalpinioideae of the pea family Fabaceae. All members of the genus are flowering trees, and most are native to Madagascar. By far the best known in the Royal Poinciana, Delonix regia.

The common name, Poinciana, comes from a former genus name Poinciana, in which the members of the current genus Delonix were classified along with plants now placed in genus Caesalpinia.
