Dance of the seven veils Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description
The Dance of the Seven Veils may be called the first (recorded) striptease, it stems from fanciful variations of to the Biblical story of Salome. According to the story, Salomé (the name is a later invention), the nubile stepdaughter of King Herod Antipas, danced this dance for him at a feast at the urging of her mother Herodias. The purpose was to so inflame Herod that he would grant her anything she asked. Apparently the dance was successful (although not explicitly described), and Herod granted Salome one request. As per her mother's instructions, Salome asked for the head of John the Baptist, who had spoken out against Salome's mother, thus earning her enmity. This is also the source of the phrase, "to bring/have someone's head on a platter." This story has also inspired countless imitation in the world of burlesque and striptease, the idea being of course, that the seventh veil removed implies total nudity. This is an Article on Dance of the seven veils.
