Danny Mack Gable (born
October 25,
1948), has often been called the
Babe Ruth of
wrestling. He went undefeated in high school and only lost his last collegiate match. His overall career wrestling record was 118-1 at
Iowa State University, where he was a 2-time
NCAA champion (
1968,
1969) and tourney MVP in
1969, 137 lb (62 kg); won gold medal, 149 lb (68 kg) at 1972
Olympics without letting a single person score a point against him. He went on to coach the U.S. freestyle wrestling team in
1988; and coach
Iowa to 9 straight
NCAA titles (
1978-
1986) and 15 overall in 21 years.
