Daito Ryu Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description
Daito Ryu (大東流), aikijutsu (合気術) or aikibudo (合気武道) a breed of jujutsu is a Japanese martial art that first rose to attention of the world under the headmastership of Sokaku Takeda (武田惣角) around 1890. Takeda had an extensive training in several martial arts and referred to the style he taught as Daito Ryu but there is disagreement to the history of this art. He certainly received much of his combat training from his father Sokichi Takeda's many arts; however while most historians accredit Sokaku Takeda with martial arts genius by creating Daito Ryu many students do not agree, citing their soke's original position. Although he claimed it was a koryu (ancient) art, there appears to be no documentation that predates him. He claimed all documentation was lost in a fire. Regardless of how old the style dates, it is generally agreed that it is closer in spirit to koryu than to modern or gendai arts.Daito Ryu is becoming more popular, but has largely been eclipsed by its offshoot aikido. Amongst its other relatives are Hakko Ryu. Daito Ryu of today is split up in some different organizations, such as Seigo Okamoto's Roppokai.
