"Cryptid" is a word used by some to describe a proposed hypothetical animal, the existence of which is unconfirmed.Loren Coleman reports that "cryptid" has been recognized as of legitimate coinage by officials at Merriam-Webster, but the term has not entered general usage and is often regarded as slang.
"Cryptids" are often creatures which are:
- Presumed extinct, but reported alive.
- Reported by witnessess, but evidence supporting such sightings is inconclusive.
