Cory Doctorow Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description
Cory Doctorow was born July 17, 1971 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada to Trotskyist and Communist teachers. He began his writing career with the publication of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Writing Science-Fiction.Currently he is a Creative Commons activist, blogger, and science fiction author in favor of private intellectual property ownership reform. Some common themes of his work include filesharing, Socialist and Communist utopias, Disney, and the abolishment of money. He won the John W. Campbell Award for best new writer in 2000 and the Sunburst award for best Canadian Science Fiction Piece for A Place So Foreign and Eight More in 2004. He lives in London where he works as European Outreach Coordinator for the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
Doctorow's first and most successful novel, Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, was touted as a demonstration of the viability of free media because it seemed to achieve commercial success despite having been offered for free online. However, subsequent revelations have shown that sales of the novel were far lower than expected, numbering only in the thousands in hardback and paperback combined.
In addition, the number of free downloads of his first novel have not to translated into increased or even sustained sales for his subsequent works. A Place So Foreign and Eight More and Eastern Standard Tribe, garnered lukewarm reviews and failed to earn commercial success despite massive publicity and free downloads. Recently, he expanded the licence terms of some of his works to allow derivative works for non-commercial purposes, although the reaction from his readership has been less than enthusiastic.
