Concepción is a city in Chile, capital of the VIII Region of Bio Bio. Counting the closely surrounding cities, it is the second largest city in the country with over one million inhabitants. The city is considered the second most important of the country.Historically, Concepción was an important settlement. It was founded by the conqueror Pedro de Valdivia in 1550 and lay just a few kilometers north of La Frontera (The Fontier), the limit between the Chilean-Spanish territory and the Mapuche land. For that reason it was an important military settlement of the Viceroyalty of Peru and also suffered several destructions caused by Mapuche armies during the early period of Spanish colony.
During the first times of Chilean Kingdom, Concepción was the home of the Real Audiencia, the most important government organism.
Its importance continued during the colonial times, and when the First National Government Board occurred in Santiago on September 18, 1810, Concepción did the same thing and later Concepcion politicians and militars became one important political force in the new country.
On February 20, 1835, the city was destroyed by an earthquake.
Also, Concepcion was used as entrance by the Spaniard Army in the attempt of the Viceroyalty of Peru to re-conquer Chile.
Today Concepción is the second largest city of the country and has many important industries. The University of Concepción is also one of the best reputed, and in the neighbouring harbour of Talcahuano is the biggest naval base.
This city is one the most active cities in music rock activities. Most of the famous rock groups in Chile were born in Concepción.
