Ciudad Acuña Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description

The city now known as Ciudad Acuña is located in the Mexican state of Coahuila, at 29°19'9" N, 100°56'3" W and a mean height above sea level of 280 metres. It stands on the Rio Grande (locally known as the Río Bravo) and offers a border crossing with the neighbouring city of Del Rio in Texas, United States.

The city was founded on December 27, 1877. In 1880, it received "Villa" status under the name of Garza Galán. In 1884 it was renamed Congregación las Vacas. In 1912 it became Villa Acuña, in honour of Manuel Acuña and, on September 16, 1951, it became Ciudad Acuña.

The city was well known in the United States (and even into Canada) during the period of the 1930s to 1960s as the location of radio station XERA (later XERF), an AM giant with up to a megawatt of broadcast power at its disposal.
