Chuang Chou (c.
340-
280 BC) is lately considered among the most brilliant of all
Chinese philosophers. As a formidable adversary of
Confucius, he was severely and frequently criticized by
Mencius. It is believed that if Chuang Chou was not the founder of that which was subsequently called
Taoism, then he must have certainly been its precursor. The profundity of his thought and power of his style were never matched by any of the Taoists.
