Cathodoluminescence is an optical and electrical phenomenon where a beam of electrons generated by an electron gun (e.g. cathode ray tube) impacts on a phosphor causing it to emit visible light. The most common example is the screen of a television. In geology, a cathodoluminescence microscope is used to examine internal structures of rock samples in order to study the history of the rock.
