Carole Keeton Strayhorn (née McClellan, née Rylander) is the Texas Comptroller of State Accounts since 1998 (re-elected 2002). A longtime Democrat, Strayhorn switched affiliation to the Republican Party in 1985.Strayhorn is the daughter of the late Page Keeton, former Dean of the University of Texas Law School and the mother of White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan (who was Strayhorn's campaign manager three times), and Mark McClellan, Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (confirmed in March 2004 to become director of Medicare). Her son Brad McClellan is an Assistant Attorney General, where he heads the state's workers' compensation section.
As Carole Keeton McClellan, she was the first female mayor and school board president of Austin, Texas. As Carole Keeton Rylander, she was the first female elected to the Texas Railroad Commission.
She has publicly feuded with current Texas governor Rick Perry over issues such as school finance reform and is thought to be planning a run for Governor of Texas during the next election.
She is married to jewelry designer and construction businessman Ed Strayhorn.
